Pinterest is a cornucopia for the masses: you can learn how to bake a cake in a microwave or how to decorate your dorm room. But one of the most helpful ways that I have learned to use Pinterest is for the job market.
While your boss probably isn’t super excited about you scrolling through Pinterest (unless your title is ‘Social Media Manager’), using Pinterest for work is one of the most useful ways to get quick and accessible tips for your career.
The great thing about Pinterest is that it is mainly crowd-sourcing images and information from across the Internet and all conformed into a pretty white and red box. this crowd-sourcing means that ample resources are uploading these tricks and keys to success, mainly to get you to buy a product, but we are smarter than that. Take that consumerism!
I have never been good at knowing exactly what is appropriate for a work setting. Whether I should wear slacks and my uniform shirt or a full on business suit, I’m pretty much clueless. Pinterest is a saint when it comes to fashion, but business fashion is a whole other niche of its own.
Using key words in the general categories helps to narrow down your search.This phrase “Business Casual Dinner” will magically separate into three isolated words, which helps to keep the sections specific on those certain topics while also being connected to one another.
Surprisingly, there are some pretty good tutorials on Pinterest. I am usually skeptical of tutorials because they have the potential of turning out so badly. But I recently used the “How To Write A Cover Letter That Employers Will Actually Read,” and while some of the tips were obvious, like the ever ambiguous ‘Know Yourself,’ the others were insightful on which tone a cover letter should be written.
Like I mentioned before, some of the content is very easy to find. Even typing in “How To…” will yield many results. This feature in Pinterest allows us to be absolutely clueless about something, and somehow 20 minutes later we are able to begin that presentation that we had no idea how to start because we found what we were looking for so quickly.
Many pins are the result of someone’s job. Someone actually gets paid to have an image and then link that image to a website, then upload the image to Pinterest. People get paid to do these jobs. Money.
These companies are attaching their logo, photos and most importantly their information to these pins. If I click on a West Elm pin of a plate, I am not only pinning that plate, I am pinning the information of how to purchase that plate and how to describe that plate, how to identify that plate. While these tools might seem useless at first, these are good templates on how to pin your own info later! If you’re lucky, you may interview or possibly work with one of the companies and you will be very familiar with their products and overall goals to the public.
Pinterest is the hub for creativity. Use some of this creative flair for your approaches to the work force. Find questions to ask at the end of an interview, research cool templates for your resumés, or get an inspiring quote from your favorite author. Whatever you choose, add some Pinterest-flair!
